Leave Management — the concepts
This menu governs leave for the whole company. This page covers the concepts; if you are setting up from scratch, follow the order at the bottom.
Four leave types
| Type | For what |
|---|---|
| Annual leave | Ordinary leave |
| Sick leave | Illness — a doctor's note is usually asked for after two days |
| Personal leave | Personal matters |
| Special leave | Marriage, bereavement, childbirth, and the like |
The number of types is fixed and cannot be extended from this screen.
Three layers decide a balance
From the most general to the most specific:
Leave Policy — the entitlement applying to everyone.
Leave templates — an alternative package for a group of people, for instance "Manager Leave".
Manual allocation per person — on the Leave Balances page. It beats both.
This is the explanation for "why is this person's balance different"
When a balance looks odd, trace from the most specific layer to the most general: check for a manual allocation first, then a template, then the policy.
The holiday calendar stands apart
The holiday calendar is not one of the three layers above, but it affects the balance — and two other things at once:
- Whether an employee can clock in on that date
- Whether that date consumes leave entitlement
- The overtime rate on that day
Setting up from scratch
Work through in order. Skipping the first step makes every balance wrong from the outset.
